Are you ready to play a vital role in advancing space exploration? The Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Logistics Engineering and Marine Operations (LE&MO) Team is seeking a driven and experienced Marine Engineering Specialist to help ensure the success of NASA’s critical transport operations. In this unique and high-impact role, you’ll be the on-site expert overseeing the operation and maintenance of NASA’s Barge Pegasus—responsible for transporting some of the largest and most valuable flight hardware in the world.

Stationed at the historic Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF), you’ll serve as a technical authority and hands-on leader, coordinating with contractors, evaluating complex marine systems, and ensuring the Pegasus is mission-ready at all times. Minimum Qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate operational requirements for support facilities.

  • Author and compile technical documentation, including plans, specifications, and agreements.

  • Support and participate in trade studies, special teams, and milestone/document reviews.

  • Promote detailed technical coordination across NASA programs, contractors, and stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with Government, prime contractors, barge operations staff, engineering disciplines, and integrated product teams.

  • Travel 30–40% to NASA and contractor sites for reviews, meetings, and inspections.

  • Analyze and integrate specialized technical data on new or modified marine equipment systems.

  • Develop knowledge of Pegasus-related documentation (e.g., Ballast Water Management Plan).

  • Provide expertise in the design, operation, test, acquisition, and disposal of marine systems (e.g., generators, ballast systems).

  • Define requirements, establish specifications, and oversee equipment installations and performance verification.

  • Draft technical data supporting provisioning, publications, and maintenance programs.

  • Advise NASA on marine policy, design loads, and vessel configuration control in collaboration with entities like ABS, USCG, EPA, and Marine Design Center.

  • Ensure compliance with ABS, USCG, EPA, and maritime standards; conduct trim and stability calculations.

  • Develop shipyard Scope of Work (SOW), provide inspections, and manage real-time decisions regarding vessel safety and condition.


Qualifications

Education

  • Preferred: BS in Marine Engineering, Marine Engineering Technology, or Marine Systems Engineering.

  • Considered: BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with demonstrated relevant marine experience.

  • Equivalent to: Ph.D. + 10–12 years, MS + 12–15 years, or BS + 15–20 years of experience.

  • Marine engineering background must be clearly evident, regardless of degree.

Required Experience (Minimum 10 years in most areas)

  • Marine operations readiness planning, evaluation, and execution.

  • Technical integration of marine equipment systems (design, operation, repair, disposal).

  • Marine policy development and regulatory compliance (ABS, USCG, EPA, etc.).

  • Collaboration with Marine Design Center, shipyards, and maritime contractors.

  • Development and oversight of marine technical procedures and configuration control.

  • Ballast systems knowledge and performance of trim/stability calculations.

  • SOW development and shipyard inspection/surveillance.

  • Application of systems engineering principles to complex marine programs.

  • Maritime provisioning and maintenance logistics support.

  • MUST BE US CITIZEN for government clearance/contract compliance

  • Strong independent and team-based work ethic.

  • Excellent communication, coordination, and critical thinking skills.

  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

  • Strong organizational skills and proactive mindset.

  • Effective customer relationship management and cross-agency collaboration.

  • NASA environment familiarity, including experience in working with MAF, KSC (Kennedy Space Center), and MSFC
  • U.S. Navy or Coast Guard Marine Engineering
  • Merchant Marine, Marine Engineering
  • Shipyard operations, contracts, and procedures
  • Petroleum Industry Marine Engineering
  • Harbor Master (with Marine Engineering)
  • Ship Captain (with Marine Engineering)
