Overview/ Job Responsibilities

Sev1Tech is looking for a Cloud Financial Operations (FinOps) Subject Matter Expert (SME) who has extensive experience in financial management and auditing, cloud architecture, a deep understanding of cloud computing technologies and services. As a Cloud FinOps SME, you will be responsible for assisting customer teams in understanding the FinOps methodology and providing guidance on how to mature the organization in FinOps capabilities. FinOps is defined by the FinOps Foundation Technical Advisory Council as “an evolving cloud financial management discipline and cultural practice that enables organizations to get maximum business value by helping engineering, finance, technology and business teams to collaborate on data-driven spending decisions.” 


Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Develop and champion cloud infrastructure cost management best practices.
  • Partner with Department of Air Force and units finance, procurement, & engineering teams to help measure and manage their cloud infrastructure costs. Be proficient with public cloud technology tools to help drive FinOps practices and methodologies.
  • Build analytical models to provide data-driven guidance on cloud infrastructure spend.
  • Create utilization and forecasting models to predict future outcomes of cloud infrastructure spend and usage.
  • Create and maintain internal documentation on FinOps and cost optimization processes.
  • Provide Cloud FinOps expertise, training, and guidance to the Government, applying the FinOps Foundation Framework, Principles and Domains, along with other industry best practices, tools and techniques.
  • Analyze cloud cost data and assist the Government to monitor, track, and report on cloud costs using existing USG-approved tools
  • Provide and implement FinOps benchmarks and key performance indicators (KPIs) designed to maximize business value of the cloud to the Government
  • Provide technical input to assist customers in analyzing emerging technologies and services to optimize cost savings.
  • Provide FinOps training sessions quarterly via Government-provided collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft Teams) to all customers, and shall include both general FinOps training along with specific areas of focus as directed by the Government.
  • Provide cloud financial operations management support to include:
    • Computing rightsizing (reduce overprovisioning and underutilization of compute resources).
    • Maximizing use of Virtual Machine (VM) savings plans/reserved instances.
    • Scheduling, including turning off VMs when no longer used.
    • Storage rightsizing and lifecycle management to include reduce overprovisioning and underutilization of storage and use of the most cost-effective storage types.
    • Snapshot management to include deletion of older snapshots while meeting DoD and Air Force data retention policies and guidance.
    • Logging Management to include determining ways to reduce volume while meeting all DoD and Air Force requirements and policies.
    • Backup Management to include determining the minimum retention requirements and access needs according to DoD and Air Force data retention requirements and archiving accordingly.
    • Providing technical input to assist in analyzing emerging technologies to optimize cost savings.
    • Assisting customer to monitor, track, and report on cloud costs using existing Government-approved tools and/or CSP-supplied tools.
    • Providing technical input to project demand for the cloud environment including cloud services and tools.
    • Gathering, aggregating, and analyzing cost data such as usage and other cloud costs.
    • Providing input to refine existing and develop new cost estimation models and methods.
    • Upgrading to newest cloud service offerings (CSOs) to take advantage of the latest technology at the same/similar price of current offerings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience with at least 2 of the cloud service providers (CSPs) Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Plaform (GCP) and/or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) services.
  • 2+ years of experience working in a DoD or other Federal Government environment
  • Deep understanding of CSP (AWS, Azure, GCP and OCI) FinOps tools.
  • Experience with relational databases, data extraction, and data analysis tools.
  • Understanding of Federal Government IT procurement processes.
  • Understanding of industry best practices related to Cloud resource tagging and tagging enforcement thru automation.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud architecture and security principles.
  • CompTIA Sec+ Certification.
  • Knowledge of security and compliance requirements for cloud-based solutions.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and teaming skills and experience.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship and must possess a minimum of an active DoD Secret security clearance.

Contingency: This position is contingent upon contract award (September/October 2024 timeframe)

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Recent DoD and ideally Department of Air Force (DAF - USAF and USSF) background and experience.
  • Familiarity and experience with DAF cloud programs and program management offices.
  • Familiarity and experience with DAF application owners and customers.
  • Experience with all four cloud service providers (AWS, MS Azure, Oracle, Google).
  • Experience with contractor manpower reporting and work breakdown structures.
  • Experience with contract budgeting and funds status reporting.
  • Experience with DoD and DAF cybersecurity requirements.
  • Knowledge of DoD Secure Cloud Computing Architecture (SCCA).
  • Experience with DoD and DAF customer communication, program management reviews, leading meetings and presentations.
  • Familiarity with DoD and DAF risk management, configuration management, and data management.
